iCloud Keychain is the built-in password manager of iOS, which assists you in saving and auto-filling your credentials. It comes in really handy, especially if you use Apple devices pretty much. The end-to-end encryption along with the 256-bit AES encryption are worth the praises too.

iCloud Keychain is a built-in feature to manage passwords in iOS devices.

However, Apple seems to have been neglecting this feature for a while. It has a bunch of problems that put off more users than it attracts.

In particular, iCloud Keychain features are well hidden away in the Settings app. It means things will get complicated if you want to configure something in the built-in password manager. For example, you need to dig down three layers within the Autofill settings of Safari just to change the credit card information, and the same goes to your Wi-fi passwords.

The biggest problem with iCloud Keychain is that it silently saves your passwords without a username. It gets tricky sometimes as people often have various usernames for online accounts.

Although there is no sign of Apple developing a standalone password manager for iOS as many people are asking for, the tech giant is making efforts to make iCloud Keychain better.

With the upcoming iOS 15.4, Apple is addressing this major pain point for users. To be more specific, when you enter a password or create a new one, Safari will ask you to enter the username linked with that password.

And it is not the only improvement Apple is bringing up.

The new iCloud Keychain will support adding notes to your saved login credentials. This comes in handy in many situations. See some examples below:

  • Two-factor authentication backup codes

It is also worth noting that iCloud Keychain in iOS 14 can alert you to weak, reused, or compromised passwords. iOS 15 introduced two-factor authentication authentication codes.

Fixing the biggest problem and adding new functions, it seems that Apple is starting to pay attention to this underrated feature of iOS. We certainly can expect iCloud Keychain to become the best iPhone app for security in the near future.
